ICSB 5th National Convention & Convocation 2014

The Inaugural Session of the 5thNational Convention of Institute of Chartered Secretaries of Bangladesh (ICSB) was held on December 05, 2014 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC),  at Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka at 9:30 am on the theme “Corporate Leadership: Enhancing Governing Excellence”. The Program was chaired by the President of ICSB Mohammad Asad Ullah FCS.

The Honorable Minister of Commerce M r. Tofail Ahmed, MP attended the Convention and inaugurated the program as the Chief Guest; while Former Commerce Minister and Civil Aviation & Tourism, Muhammad Faruk Khan, MP, attended the Convention as the Special Guest.

The Honorable Chief Guest, during his speech, announced that it was the initiative of Commerce Ministry under able guidance of Prime Minister, Sheik Hasina The Chartered Secretaries Act 2010 was passed in the parliament and Institute of Chartered Secretaries (ICSB) has been established for developing and promoting Corporate Management and Governance in the Listed Companies. The professional skill developed by this Institute shall not only generate employment opportunities for private sectors in the country, but also open up avenues for job market abroad as the syllabus of ICSB has been formulated according to global standard.  He has given the assurance about providing any necessary support to the Institute for the development of the profession of Company Secretaries and the establishment of good governance in the country.

The Special Guest Muhammad Faruk Khan, MP, in his speech, highly appreciated on the performance of the Institute. He also stressed to provide modern educational equipments and the need of an appropriate premise for the creation of adequate education facilities, and he also referred when the Chartered Secretaries Act 2010 was enacted how supportive the Government had been towards the Institute for development of infrastructure of the Institute for providing adequate professional education for the development of the profession of Chartered Secretaries in Bangladesh.

Mohammad Asad Ullah FCS, President, ICSB, in his speech spoke of the importance of the need of Company Secretaries and their professional knowhow for the establishment of good corporate governance in the Country. He also spoke for the development of the skills of the Members of ICSB, who are serving as Company Secretaries in renowned organizations all over Bangladesh. The President requested the concerned Ministry and the Government to help ICSB in developing the quality of education materials and the own premises of the Institute. He specially mentioned that recently ICSB has purchased a land at Aftabnagar to build its own complex with state-of-the art building and modern facilities. He requested for funding Ministry of Finance through Ministry of Commerce for this complex purpose.

The Convention was attended by a large number of Members, Corporate Professionals, Foreign Delegates and other important dignitaries from all over the country.

  After the inaugural session, the Institute also arranged three technical sessions from 10:30 am to 4:15 pm.

 First Technical Session: “Ethical Leadership Promotes Governing Excellence”.

Dr. A. B. Mirza Md. Azizul Islam Former Advisor, Ministry of Finance, Planning, Commerce, Post and Telecommunications, Government of Bangladesh was the Session Chairman. Mohammad Sanaullah FCS, Past President & Council Member of ICSB presented the Keynote Paper. Mohammad Bul Hassan FCS Treasurer, ICSB and Hossain Sadat FCS, Council Member, ICSB were the official discussants respectively.

 Second Technical Session:  “Leading Effective Boards-Ensure Governance.”

 Faruk Ahmed Siddiqi, Former Chairman, BSEC was the Session Chairman. M. Naseemul Hye FCS, Senior Vice President of ICSB presented the Keynote Paper. N. G. Chakraborty FCS Councilor, ICSB and Md. Monirul Alam FCS, Vice President, ICSB were the official discussants respectively.

 Third Technical Session: “The Changing Role of Company Secretary from compliance to Governance.”

Suhel Ahmed Choudhury Former Secretary, Ministry of Commerce was the Session Chairman. CS Nesar Ahmed FCS, Former President, ICSI presented the Keynote Paper. Md. Shahid Farooqui FCS Council Member, ICSB and Md. Azizur Rahman FCS, Council Member, ICSB were the official discussants respectively.

In the evening The 5th Convocation of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries of Bangladesh (ICSB) was held at same place at 5:00 pm. Advocate Anisul Huq, Honorable Minister for Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Bangladesh was present in the Program as Chief Guest while Hedayetullah Al Mamun, Senior Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of Bangladesh attended the function as Special Guest. The Convocation has been presided over by the President of the Institute Mohammad Asad Ullah FCS.

Prof. Dr. A A M S Arefin Siddiqui Vice Chancellor of the Dhaka University was the Convocation Speaker.

 The Chief Guest, Advocate Anisul Huq, Honorable Minister for Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Bangladesh felt proud to be present as Chief Guest. In his speech the Honorable Minister highlighted the qualities that are needed to become a sound Company / Chartered Secretary, and the roles needed to flourish in the corporate world. He also felt that the Institute by its professionally qualified members will play a vital role in Listed Companies Act. The Chartered Secretaries will also play the role to face in the competitive business environment as well as to ensure good governance for sustainable development of the economy of the Country.

 The Program was rounded off with an attractive cultural event enjoyed by all.
