Mr. Md. Shabbirul Alam Chowdhury has joined the Institute of Chartered Secretaries of Bangladesh (ICSB) as the Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on 7 June 2026. Prior to joining ICSB, he served as Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank, where he held a number of key leadership positions during a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in central banking and financial sector regulation. Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to monetary policy implementation, banking supervision, foreign exchange management, debt and treasury operations, credit guarantee schemes, CMSME development and institutional governance.

Mr. Chowdhury joined Bangladesh Bank in 1993 and steadily rose through the ranks by virtue of his professionalism, integrity and leadership. During his long and illustrious career, he served in several important capacities, including Executive Director, Director of Credit Guarantee Department, Director & Faculty Member of Bangladesh Bank Training Academy, Director and Fund Manager of Grihayan Tahbil under the Prime Minister's Office, Additional Director in the Departments of Financial Institutions and Markets, Banking, SME & SPD and Debt Management, as well as Joint Director in the Foreign Exchange Inspection and Foreign Exchange Policy Departments. In these roles, he played a vital role in strengthening banking regulation and supervision, enhancing financial stability, promoting financial inclusion, modernizing banking operations and formulating national-level financial policies.

A respected banking professional and trainer, Mr. Chowdhury has also served as a faculty member and guest trainer at Bangladesh Bank Training Academy and several leading bank training institutes. He has conducted numerous professional development programmes on foreign trade, Islamic banking, financial derivatives, customer relationship management, leadership, corporate governance, emotional intelligence and other contemporary banking subjects, contributing significantly to the capacity building of banking professionals in Bangladesh.

Mr. Chowdhury possesses a strong academic background with a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Bangladesh University of Professionals, an MBA in Finance and Banking, a Diploma in Computer Science from International Islamic University Chittagong, an LL.B. and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Chittagong. He has also received extensive professional training at home and abroad on banking supervision, credit risk management, financial regulation, ICT security, leadership, treasury management and Islamic finance from renowned institutions in Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and the United States.

Mr. Chowdhury served as President and Secretary of the Bangladesh Bank Club, Chattogram, Secretary of the Bangladesh Bank Officers' Welfare Council, Joint Secretary of the Bankers Club Chattogram, and President and Secretary of the Lions Club of Chittagong Hill View. He is also a Life Member of several professional, social and welfare organizations, reflecting his commitment to institutional development and community service.
